My Style Staples: a cozy, vintage look book
/A couple years ago, I didn’t have a personal aesthetic or style of dress. I was a university student travelling from place to place, sitting around for hours at a time, so it made sense to wear something comfortable. Whatever was casual and convenient at the time.
I think 2018 was the year I started to focus on my personal aesthetic. I figured out what colours, fabrics and styles I liked. I’ll be honest and say Pinterest and Instagram were a huge help. All the endless scrolling through photos to find inspirational look books is the thing that pushed me to find my own style.
Not because I wanted to post aesthetic selfies, but just to be more confident when I step outside the house.
I don’t really believe in matching your sense of style to a specific aesthetic. However, if I had to compare my personal style to anything, I’d say it is cozy, soft, and slightly vintage.
I thought it would be fun to pick apart one of my favourite outfit-of-the-day looks and show you all my favourite style staples. At the same time, also to show my personal aesthetic and style to you.
Tee shirts
I own about 3 tee shirts that have prints or patterns on them. The rest are all plain and on a spectrum of colours. Usually, I prefer minimal but I have been looking for deeper, richer colours of late. Like green, red, yellow and brown.
Shorts
My go-to is a cute pair of linen shorts. I like them because they’re breathable, not constricting and they can dress them up or down. If not linen, then I’ll wear corduroy because they’re super soft and comfy.
Socks
I am one of those girls that just…collects a lot of socks. Especially ones with cute designs and patterns on them. I like to pair them with different types of sneakers I own. I have a lot of art socks because they’re super trendy and aesthetic.
Sneakers
As a university student, I wore a lot of sneakers because I was walking everywhere. It doesn’t surprise me that sneakers are the only thing I own now. They’re casual and comfortable and you can wear them with shorts, pants, skirts or dresses.
Cardigans
Anyone who knows me already knows that I have at least 10 cardigans and each one is a different color. So when my tee shirts are plain and a little minimalist, I like to pair them with a colorful cardigan. Recently, I got a pretty yellow cardigan from my mum, but this chestnut brown one is my oldest and my favourite.
Hair scrunchies
Another thing I love to collect! Whether I’m just wearing it on my wrist or pushing my hair into a messy bun, I always like to have a velvet or cotton scrunchie.
Jewelry
I don’t wear a lot of accessories, but I will always wear a dainty, small necklace. It’s like the last element that brings the whole look together for me.
the complete look:
This is what the outfit looks like when it’s all put together. It’s cozy and a little bit preppy but also very casual and stylish. I’ve said in the past that I’m a huge fan of dressing like a cartoon character, so this photo below is kind of the template for a lot of day-to-day outfits I wear.
