How to decorate a cozy desk

My desk is so much more than a workspace.

It’s my artistic sanctuary where I work on my creative writing, my journaling, my drawing, and any other crafts.

It’s also a place of learning where I study and research all the subjects and topics that interest me.

Occasionally, my desk is also a dining table and I have the morning coffee stains to prove it.

I spend so much time at my desk that it’s a priority for me to have a workspace that inspires and motivates me to work well. In anything I do.

I do this by keeping my desk clean and tidy, and by curating a workspace that is aesthetic, minimalist, and cozy.

Today, I’m going to share a desk tour with you and give you some ideas for how you can decorate and organize your own desk. If you want to find inspiration for desk décor, stay and read the rest of this post!

storage

When I was first decorating and organising my desk, I knew I needed a way to store all of my tools, accessories, and stationery that I use every day. I knew that I wanted storage that didn’t take up too much space. It also had to keep all of my stationery out of sight for the sake of the colour palette I had in mind.

I settled on this 3-tiered wooden cabinet with drawers that I got for $20. This style is really popular these days for bedroom accessories and furniture, so it will be easy to find something similar in a store near you.

The cabinet used to be a different colour until I gave it a few coats of white paint. I use it to keep all my ink pens, markers, notepads, stamp sets, and other pieces of stationery.

I like this cabinet because it’s very minimal and small. It’s also secure enough that I can stack items on top of it if I need to. The storage you use depends on what stationery you have and how often you use it. That’s something to keep in mind when decorating your own desk.

Here are some good ideas for desk storage:

  • Bookshelves

  • Hanging wall shelves

  • Boxes or containers with lids

  • Paper trays

  • Pencil cases

  • Jewellery boxes

lighting

There used to be a lamp in my room but it broke. Around the same time, I started to become incredibly fascinated with fairy lights and ambient lighting over practical lighting.

I replaced the lamp I had with a 2-metre string of LED fairy lights that plug directly into the wall socket. Using wall hooks and nails, I arranged the string lights in a really messy, natural way above my desk and around the high window sill next to it.

Maybe it’s not the most practical light source for a desk but it has its uses. For one, I like the warm glow around me when I’m journaling, writing, or reading at my desk. If it’s important, and I do need bright light, I’ll turn the main light on.

If you’re going to use fairy lights to decorate your desk, you should aim to buy the kind that aren’t battery-operated. I’ve noticed the ones I use are brighter and last a lot longer than novelty lights.

Here are some other ideas for lights:

  • A table lamp

  • A floor lamp

  • Novelty lights

  • Candles

décor & accessories

A desk that feels and looks aesthetic helps me feel inspired and motivated to sit down and work. I didn’t want to spend too much money, so I tried to re-purpose, thrift, and DIY what I could to create the workspace I wanted.

There are a few glass jars and bottles that act as vases for my numerous dried flowers. As well as a hand-me-down amber glass owl that my mum gave to me.

I also have a black wire wall grid that I bought for $7 which I use to hang a dream catcher, more dried flowers, and a handmade embroidery hoop.
