Fictional character look book (part 1)
/When it comes to things like art, writing, and music, there is inspiration all around you. You start to look at things you like the most and things you never thought to notice before. It is the same with fashion.
There are a thousand-and-one ways to find inspiration for the way you dress. Like social media, magazines, videos, celebrities and more. One popular way to do it is to find ideas for outfits from fictional characters.
A little while ago, it peeked my interest and I decided to make a Pinterest board for outfits inspired by fictional characters. Now, I’m taking it one step further and creating some fictional look books of my own.
Today, I thought I’d share 5 different outfits inspired by some of my favourite fictional characters from my childhood. All of these are compiled from clothing I already had in my dresser.

Daria Morgendorffer
The titular character from the 90s-00s cartoon show, “Daria”. For this outfit, I threw together a pair of black corduroy shorts, a yellow long-sleeved cotton top, my green corduroy jacket with a furry collar, and a pair of beaten black boots. This outfit remains my favourite because it feels like a replica of the character’s look. It feels like something I could wear to a show. It’s also casual enough that I could wear it in public without people realizing it.
Wednesday Addams
The mysterious maniac of a daughter from “The Addams Family” is easy to dress as. All her clothes are black and white. This outfit is made up of a pair of black shorts, a pair of black boots, and a black and white woolen sweater in the same style as Wednesday’s iconic look. I wanted this look to be neat and as close to the original as possible. Simply wearing black and white would be too broad. For some characters, like this one, the outfit has to be precise.
Lisa Simpson
The bright young girl with spiky yellow hair from “The Simpsons” inspired this outfit. This outfit brings together two of my favourite hand-me-downs from my older sister. It is a bright orange skirt with little white flowers on it, a cotton off-the-shoulder top, and a pair of black ballet slippers. I like this outfit because it feels very feminine, summery and girlish. I think it’s the skirt that completes the look, since it’s the same color as Lisa’s dress. But I do find myself wishing I hadn’t thrown away my orange overall dress. It would’ve been perfect for this look.
Debbie Thornberry
The older teenage sister in the show “The Wild Thornberrys”. Growing up, I always thought she was the coolest – with her grunge fashion and music choices. She is an icon. This look combines a pair of high waisted denim jeans, a long-sleeved cotton crop top, and a pair of scuffed black vans sneakers. I think if I included a green jacket, it would complete the whole outfit.
Blossom
The so-called ringleader of the “Power Puff Girls”. I haven’t seen this show in years but I remember loving it so much; especially the characters. This outfit is a pair of white sneakers, a high-waisted black skirt, and an oversized blush pink sweater. I wanted this look to have a soft, girlish quality because that’s what Blossom was like in the show (at least in memory). But it also had to be cool and full of girl power.
These are 5 outfits inspired by the fashion of fictional characters. These were really fun to arrange and play dress-up in. I hope this helped you with your own fashion inspiration. This experience has taught me that there is no right or wrong way to create an inspired look book. The key is to just have fun and do what you can with what you have.
